Amidst the current record smashing virtual land sales – the headline above is certainly an attention grabbing one. Why you shouldn’t get in on the current land craze is the central argument of Joakim Vindenes in this fascinating and smart read.
Vindenes (a PhD Candidate in Virtual Reality at the University of Bergen) puts forward a compelling argument – why are companies trying to translate a real world scarcity (land) into a virtual one? After all the scarcity is inherently self made in the virtual world where “land” is really an unlimited concept limited only constrained by servers, bandwidth and power.
Vindenes reckons we should be aiming far higher than simply replicating the physical world into the virtual – where the creative possibilities are fabulously greater. And above that, when a resource scarcity is artificially manufactured, is it really scarce? What do you think?
